Ottawa Moving Costs:
How Much Should You Expect to Pay?
The cost of a move in Ottawa is not one-size-fits-all. Your final price depends on when you move, how much you’re moving, how far you’re going, and the crew size required. We avoid fixed generic pricing and instead focus on realistic, situation-based estimates.
The Structure Behind Our Pricing
Two-Mover Crew
Base hourly rate for a 2-mover crew with truck. A 3-minimum hours charge applies to regular local moves.
Truck Charges
Truck charges are not fixed — they are location- and mileage-dependent based on travel distance, access, and logistics. You don’t overpay for short local moves.
Minimum Charge
Minimum 3 hours applies to each regular local move. Assessed individually based on scope and logistics — not a padded flat rate.
Timing plays a significant role in pricing. Rates can be lower during less busy periods — mid-month weekdays or winter — and higher during peak demand including weekends, month-end, and summer. Contacting us early lets us recommend the most cost-effective options and secure the right crew size.
How Many Movers Do You Need?
Choosing the right number of movers is one of the most important factors in controlling your overall cost. More movers often means a faster move — which frequently costs less in total.
| Home Size | Recommended Crew | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Studio or 1-bedroom apartment / Small 1.5-bedroom | 2 movers + truck | Lower volume, manageable carry distances. Efficient with a 2-person crew. |
| 2–3 bedroom apartment or house | 3 movers + truck | Added crew reduces total move time. Often delivers better value per dollar than a 2-person crew on larger jobs. |
| Large home, heavy furniture, or specialty items | 4+ movers / multiple trucks | Larger homes or moves with heavy items benefit from additional movers and sometimes a second truck or trailer. |
What Affects the Total Cost of Your Ottawa Move
Always Considered
- Crew size. More movers = faster move = often lower total cost on larger jobs.
- Hours worked. Hourly billing — efficiency directly benefits you.
- Truck travel distance. Mileage-based, not fixed — short local moves aren’t padded.
- Time of year and day of week. Weekends, month-end, and summer command higher rates.
- Stairs and elevator access. Walk-up floors, no elevator, or mandatory elevator booking windows all affect time.
- Carrying distances. Long driveways, rural access, or distant parking increase carry time.
May Add Surcharges
- Pianos. Upright and grand — requires specialized handling and equipment.
- Major appliances. Refrigerators, washers/dryers — weight and bulk add time and risk.
- Fitness equipment. Treadmills, ellipticals, weight systems.
- Pool tables, hot tubs, marble or granite tables. High weight and fragility.
- Gun safes, vaults, server racks. Extreme weight requiring specialized dollies.
- Exterior hoisting. When tight entrances require items to be lifted or hoisted from outside.
All surcharges are discussed and agreed to before the move — never added as surprises on the invoice.
When Rates Are Higher — and When They’re Lower
Peak Periods — Higher Rates
- Weekends (Friday evening through Sunday)
- Month-end and beginning-of-month (last 3 / first 3 days)
- June, July, August (peak summer season)
- Statutory holidays
- Last-minute bookings with limited availability
- High-demand moving days (around school year start/end)
Off-Peak Periods — Best Rates & Availability
- Mid-month dates (10th–20th)
- Monday through Thursday
- October through April (winter season)
- Booked 3–4+ weeks in advance
- Flexible start times (not 8AM sharp)
Off-peak moves also have more scheduling flexibility — easier to book the exact date and crew size you want.
Why the Cheapest Quote Is Rarely the Best Value
The moving industry in Canada is largely unregulated — a wide range of operators, from professional companies to temporary one-truck operations, can all advertise similar services at very different price points. Because most people move infrequently, some companies treat each job as a one-time transaction rather than a long-term client relationship.
One practice worth knowing about: some movers deliberately underquote a job to secure the booking, then justify higher charges on the day by attributing the increase to extra furniture, poorly packed boxes, or access conditions. Moving contracts in Canada legally permit movers to retain possession of your belongings until payment is made — which can put you at a significant disadvantage if a dispute arises mid-move.
In practice, a professional company at a higher hourly rate often costs less overall than a cheaper provider — due to greater efficiency and avoided damage.
Full-Time Employees — Not Day Labour
All Foosun Moving crews are full-time employees, not temporary workers. This ensures consistent training, accountability, and professional standards on every job. Experienced movers work faster — which directly benefits clients paying by the hour.
